one last jackmove…

(Skull & Bones Portrait from Yale University.  Man left of the clock is George H. W. Bush)

do you really think the proposed $700 billion dollar economic bailout has the people’s best interests in mind?  this is one last robbery before the train leaves town for good.

“SOMETIMES NOTHIN’ CAN BE A PRETTY COOL HAND.”

my pops showed me cool hand luke when i was a kid, and it remains to this day one of my favorite movies of all time.  the opening image of paul newman stumbling down the street, lopping off parking meters with a pipe cutter struck me as the the epitome of anti-establishment.  yet throughout his whole career, and even into his reign as a salad dressing mogul, paul newman remained a completely generous philanthropist, putting him in an eschelon of “cool” that transcends the screen into the real world.

R.I.P. PAUL NEWMAN – THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.

tonight didn’t strike me as much of a debate, as it did a chance to see both candidates side by side, giving us an idea of where they are each at currently.  given the events of the last several weeks, this gave us an opportunity to see how each has responded to the looming economic disaster, as well as the issues that have been paramount for the last several years, such as iraq and the general policy on foreign diplomacy.

obviously those of us who are not journalists see this through our own lens of passions and positions, so it is hard to remain completely objective.  i can’t help the fact that when i hear john mccain speak, i want to reach for the nearest fork and jam it in his eye.  (btw, i discovered a crucial correllary for that hatred, which i will return to).

in “the biggest bank failure in history,” JP Morgan has acquired the now-defunct Washington Mutual.  I think they picked up their entire assests for about $47.23, a ‘93 corolla with 150,000 miles, and a bunch of those free game stamps from subway.  if i wasn’t busy working, i could’ve at least competed in the auction.  my ‘87 fleetwood would’ve counter-balanced not having any cash to trade.  and i turned in my subway stamps.  anyway, i greatly look forward to racing to a Chase branch soon to deposit the $11 i just got from the coinstar machine to cover the gas i pumped at 3am last night.

good times.

UPDATE: dang.  failing business can be good for the bosses.  check out how WashingtonMutual CEO Alan Fishman made about $20 MILLION in under twenty days as the bank thrift collapsed.  read story here.

R.I.P. EARL PALMER – ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

the legendary earl palmer just passed away at his home.  one of the most recorded drummers of all time, and without whom there would be no funk as we know it.  i had the pleasure of seeing him perform in his later years, and he tore it up without missing a step.  rest in peace, earl.  thanks for everything.

and our best wishes go out to travis barker and dj am.   that is seriously horrible news and i hope that they are able to make full and complete recoveries.  both of those guys are at the top of their game and among the few truly talented artitsts out there.  and our hearts go out to those who lost their lives.

this album is AWESOME.  listened to it about 18 times this weekend.  total nostalgia without a trace of camp.  “instant vintage” lived up to its name, this one is instant classic.  featuring stevie wonder on harmonica on the track “never give you up.”  saadiq just goes his own way.  this is grammy stuff.  go buy it tomorrow.
