…but in 2009 I’m aiming for more of an interplanetary domination kind of thing. this shit cracks me up, don’t take everything so serious.
i’m starting a new night at the Verdugo. best in brews meets best in beats. don’t expect another hip-hop night. i wanna get weird. like running naked through sprinklers. sound sprinklers. i present to you….ANNO DOMINI. which, literally translated, means “year of total domination over your ass.”

so this photo of topshelf made me look at all the flyers for this year…and then i got a warm fuzzy feeling. we had a good year and i’m thankful to those who helped make it happen. i’m not gonna run through the whole list, for fear of forgetting anyone, but the flyers only tell half the story. it was humbling for me to play with so many talented artists. i hope that everyone wants to get down again in the future and we can keep expanding La Familia Broke Folk. thanks to all.
btw, in celebration of the one year anniversary of our one year anniversary (more on that soon), here is a mix that topshelf made last year about this time, courtesy of MM!!!

well…she didn’t make it to sing at obama’s inauguration, but at least she made it to see him get elected. one of the most beautiful voices ever, one that carried hope. she was as influential in the civil rights movement as she was in the music world. you will be missed down here.
the following is one of my favorite odetta tracks of all time, “hit or miss”, and it took me a few years to find the original on vinyl. enjoy. also, the ny times article on her passing is here.
